SDA, What Does It Mean? The acronym, SDA, refers to “Seventh-day Adventist”, also known as “Adventists” (AD-vent-ists). The name Seventh-day Adventist includes vital beliefs for us as a people. “Seventh-day” refers to the Biblical Sabbath which from Creation has always been on the seventh day of the week, or Saturday. “Adventist” refers to our passionate belief that Jesus Second Coming is very soon. Your Adventist NeighborYou may have noticed that your Adventist neighbor often conducts him or herself differently. They do not have the same dietary habits you may have. They go to church on Saturday, not Sunday. To learn more about your Adventist neighbor, please read the article Your Adventist Neighbor. About Seventh-day AdventistsThe Seventh-day Adventist church is currently one of the fastest growing Protestant churches world-wide. Currently there are 28 million followers of the Adventist Message, and 14 million baptized members. As a Christian church, Seventh-day Adventists are a faith community rooted in the beliefs described by the Holy Scriptures. Seventh-day Adventists accept the Bible as their only creed and hold certain fundamental beliefs to be the teaching of the Holy Scriptures. These beliefs constitute the church's understanding and expression of the teaching of Scripture. Adventists believe a Trinity of three persons--the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit--make up one God. They made salvation possible when Jesus, the Son, came to earth as a baby in Bethlehem and lived a sinless life in accordance with the Father's will. When Jesus was crucified for the sins of the people of the world and arose from the dead on the third day, victory was won for everyone. To learn more about what Adventists believe, please read the article, What Adventist Believe. Who Is Ellen G. White?Ellen White is a pivotal individual in the Adventist church. She was one of several co-founders of the Adventist movement, which was spawned by the Millerite Movement in the 1840s. Adventism has its roots in the Methodist and Baptist churches. Mrs. White was married to an Adventist pastor, James White, and had many visions and dreams, which have been tested through the seven tests of a prophet. These inspirations led the church to found world class health and medical centers, schools, missionary work, and many other outreaches of the church today. Mrs. White is also the most published female author in United States history, publishing work such as The Great Controversy, Education, The Desire of Ages, and many other works. While Mrs. White’s writings help to guide the church in its understanding of purpose and the meanings of scripture, they in no way supercede the scriptures. She herself refers to the Bible as the Great Light, and her own writings as a lesser light. To learn more about Mrs. White, please check out the White Estate website. Sabbath Services
